FREE COFFEE, 1880
The well-dressed gentleman on the left holding the cup of
coffee is Dr. John Kennion of Brooklyn. With his specially designed coffee urn
cart, Dr. Kennion mounted a campaign to get people to stop drinking alcohol by
offering them free coffee from a porcelain cup with bread and butter
instead.
PANCAKE DEMONSTRATION, 1882
Contrary to popular
belief, Pancakes were not invented by Aunt Jemima, but by the New York chef
shown here demonstrating his new dish. Unfortunately, no one can remember his
name.
BLOSSOM RESTAURANT,
103 Bowery, 1935
It was during the Depression years of the 1930's that New York City's Bowery earned it's reputation as a hangout for bums. Actually, they were poor transients and men on relief and they stayed in lodgings like the Fulton Hotel which charged 30 cents for the night. If you enlarge the photo, you can see what they were charging for a meal and a haircut in those days.
