DOCKSIDE RESTAURANT,1871
This dive along the New York City Docks probably did very little of their own
cooking. New York has always had many establishments selling second-hand goods,
and the Sailors eating here were actually having Second-Hand meals! In those
days it was common practice for the uptown restaurants to sell uneaten portions
of their food left over by their wealthy diners to places like this. In 1871, a
meal along the Docks cost about 10 or 15 cents.
DOWNTOWN LUNCHROOM,1888
It is rumored that Morris Wong got his start as a
cook in this busy Lunchroom in Manhattan's downtown business district.
ICE CREAM PARLOR, 1868
During an August Heat Wave, some of New York's more
fashionable citizens try to cool off by eating Ice Cream. They might have been
cooler if they'd gone home and taken off their clothes.
